Chinese Surrounded Barn

by Laurel | February 1st, 2013

18 September 1900

Sunday afternoon a young man of good family in the Highlands threw a stone through the window of the Chinese laundry on West Hampden street. There happened to be a number of Chinamen in the place at the time, and one chased the boy to Hick’s stable, where he hid himself. The others came out of the laundry, and for over an hour 14 Chinamen surrounded the barn, while another went for a policeman. The officer came and assured the Celestials that they would not be bothered further and that the boy would be attended to. The boy, nevertheless, was permitted to go and was not arrested as he should have been, and taught to leave the inoffensive foreigners alone.
