Catherine Ward, Eight, at Hospital With Fractured Skull — Was Not Sliding on Closed Street
Holyoke, Jan. 2 — Catherine Theresa Ward, eight, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick J. Ward of 316 Hillside Avenue, is at Holyoke Hospital with a fractured skull sustained this noon when her sled collided with a light milk truck owned by P.J. Bresnahan of 362 Hillside Avenue and operated by John Coffee of 45 North Summer Street.
The driver reported the accident to the police traffic bureau. He stated that he was going south on hillside Avenue and when a short distance from Hicks Avenue noticed the child on a sled approaching the path of his truck. He said that the child was only about 12 feet from him when he first saw her. He pulled sharply to the left and heard the noise of the impact. He found the child in the street.
With her sister, Marie, 12 he brought the injured child to Holyoke hospital where she was treated by Dr. Edward P. Hand. She is considered critically injured. Her sister, who was part way up the hill on Hicks Avenue, saw her sister sliding toward the truck but did not see the impact. It is not believed that the truck ran over the child.
Hicks Avenue is not one of the streets which have been closed to all traffic to allow sliding. It is very steep and does not afford a very clear view from either north or south.
