Oxford Club Owner Pleads Not Guilty to Liquor Charge
Holyoke, January 16 — Richard Dent, alleged proprietor of the Oxford Club at 65 Ely Street, pleaded not guilty in district court this morning to a charge of illegal possession of liquor and will be tried the 19th. Dorilla Desmarais of 63 North East, pleaded guilty to keeping a gaming implement and was find $50. He also admitted a charge of illegal possession of liquor and was fined $100 and given a suspended sentence of three months.
Both men were arrested yesterday afternoon, following raids conducted on their premises in the “Flats.” Dent is alleged to be the proprietor of the Oxford Club, where the police seized a small quantity of whiskey. At 63 North East Street, the seizure consisted of 69 bottles of beer, several quarts of whiskey and a nickle and quarter slot machine.
Assisting Marshal McGarry in the raids were Capt. Peter A. Cullen, Inspector Peter Manning, Sergt. John Moriarty, Inspector Timothy Murphy and Patrolman Luke Kilmurray.
