Militiaman and Ex-Soldier Dies
Harry E. Root of Holyoke Served at Two Different Times in Spanish War

Holyoke, April 20Harry E. Root, 43, a veteran of the Spanish-American war, and well-known in militia circles in Western Massachusetts, died just before noon today at the home, 109 Suffolk Street. He was born in Dalton, but had passed nearly ll his life in this city.

At the outbreak of the Spanish-American war, he enlisted in Co. D, 2d Massachusetts Infantry, and served throughout the Cuban campaign with that command. Again, in 1899, he enlisted in Co. F, 26th United States Volunteer Infantry, and served two years in the Philippine Islands.besides being a member of Nelson A. Miles camp, Spanish War Veterans, he was also a member of Chicopee Lodge of Odd Fellows, Wampanpoag Tribe of Red Men and Court Juliet, Foresters of America, both of this city.

Besides his widow, he leaves two brothers, Fred J., of this city, and William H., of Springfield; a niece, Frances E. Bailey; two aunts, Mrs. W. E. Judd and Mrs. Sarah Bartlett of this city. The funeral will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 2:30, with burial in Forestdale Cemetery.

Holyoke — Mrs. Lola M. (Schaff) Root died suddenly at her home 201 Chestnut Street, and according to the report of Medical Examiner George L. Ross the woman died hours before  her body was found Sunday. Mrs. Root was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the Glenwood Rebekah Lodge and treasurer of the Helen Fairgrieves Auxiliary, Spanish American War Veterans. She was for many years in the millinery department of the McAuslan & Wakelin Co. Mrs. Root , the widow of Harry Root, leaves several nieces and nephews and the funeral will take place at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Wednesday afternoon at 2 with services to be conducted by Rev. David E. Evans and Rev. John F. Miller. Burial will be in Forestdale Cemetery. Calling hours at the Alger Funeral Home from this afternoon at 2 until the time of the funeral.
