Old Graveyard Site
The W. H. Abbott Property (in 1911) is bounded by Northampton Street on the left, Allyn Street at the top, and Hampden Street at the bottom of this image. Arlington Street is clearly labeled. According to the accompanying article, this property was once used as an early burial ground.
Bones Unearthed in Old Cemetery –Workman on Site of Ireland Parish Graveyard find Gruesome Relics — Holyoke, May 4 — workman excavating for the cellar of the house to be built by Dr. J. E. Brindamour on the east side of Northampton Street between Allyn and Hampden Streets, uncovered some bones and remain of three or four coffins today that had probably been overlooked when the bodies once buried here were removed. The bones recovered consisted of a skull, leg bones and part of the frame of a man. The bones were found on the site of one of the earlier cemeteries, though not that of the Ireland Parish Cemetery, which was located a mile or so further south. It was a small cemetery used mainly for members of the First Congregational Church and was not started until after 1800.
Clarence Sikes Hurt — Sustains Broken Kneecap When Ford and Trolly Collide. Holyoke, May 4 — Clarence Sikes, 25, of 41 Beech Street, operating a Ford car this forenoon, was in collision with a Holyoke trolly car near the entrance to the Bausch–Long Road to the plant off from Chicopee Street, Willimansett. Sikes received a broken kneecap. He was taken to the House of Providence Hospital and attended by Dr. Bliss. The front of the Ford was demolished, the radiator being broken and the mudguards smashed.
Cote Loses Fingertips — Henry Cote of 22 Hamilton Street, an employee of the White and Wyckoff company, lost the tips of two middle fingers of his left hand in an accident at the company’s plant this morning. he was taken to the Holyoke City Hospital and attended by J. J. Carroll.
Y.M.C.A. Plans Circus — George R. Sampson will be ring master and master of ceremonies a the annual circus and exhibition at the Young Men’s Christian Association at 8, Friday night. Directors E.W. Beaman, R.R. Simmons and Arthur Gemme are in charge of the drills and features. Results of the International young Men’s Christian Association junior hexathlon athletic meet show at the Holyoke Association to be considerably better than the average associations, Holyoke stood 16th. The local association stood second in Massachusetts being beaten out by Cambridge by a margin of 30 points.
Thus far there have been fewer requests for garden plots than usual from the Holyoke Waterpower Company.
Edward Morrison, 10, of 57 Mosher Street, lost four teeth last night when he collided with an automobile operated by Frank McNally of Ely Court.
