I accepted this and for a long time assumed it to be idiomatic.   Of course I did learn that it was an icebox because in fact refrigeration in this era was from use of ice, rather than the electric-driven machines we are familiar with today.<\/p>\n<p>Today these old wooden iceboxes are worth significantly more than the purchase price you see in the ad, selling today for hundreds on up.
