Hess, in part because of the reference to Social Security. It isn&#8217;t Holyoke specific, but it represents an attitude that was probably found most everywhere in America.<\/p>\n<p>This cartoon was published in the 1950&#8217;s &#8212; though it references an older time as you can see my the clothing the characters are wearing &#8212; and I can remember reading these (and other newspaper comic strips) when I was a child young enough where I was a new, stumbling reader\u00a0 and struggled to find the humor. Erwin L. Hess was a genius in my opinion, I had totally forgotten about him and just stumbled across this one. You will probably want to click through to view the largest size.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently Hess was a big football fan &#8212; you can read more about him and the amazing collection of football clippings he assembled along with his son <a href=\"http:\/\/hessarchives.com\/Biography.shtml\">Dale at this bio link<\/a> &#8212; and take a look around the website, there are some cartoons for sale among other things.
