Mrs. Susie N. Russell Dies Suddenly<\/strong><\/p>\n

Widow of Henry L. Russell — Funeral to Be Held on Wednesday Afternoon<\/strong><\/p>\n

Holyoke, November 11 —<\/strong> Mrs. Susie Newton Russell, 71, widow of Henry L. Russell, died suddenly today at her home 244 Oak Street following a sudden heart attack. She had been suffering from heart trouble for some time.Mrs. Russell was born in this city in 1862 the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Newton. Mr. Newton being one o the pioneer paper makers in Holyoke and interested in various industrial enterprises. Mrs. Russell was educated in the public schools and the Abbott Academy at Andover graduating in one of the early classes.<\/p>\n

On October 12, 1886, she marries Henry L. Russell, who died last March. Mrs. Russell was a woman of outstanding public spirit and gave generously to such organizations as the Y.W.C.A. of which she was president for a time, and the Girl Scouts. She was a prominent worker in the interests of the Skinner Coffee House, the Holyoke Hospital, and one of the early members of the Thursday Club and a life long member of the Second Congregational Church.<\/p>\n

She leaves one daughter, Mrs. James N. Logan, and two sons, Robert H. and Stuart A., all of this city; a brother Herbert R Newton, president-treasurer of the Newton Paper Company and one sister, Mrs. Alice N. Judd of Greenfield. The funeral will be held in the Skinner memorial chapel Wednesday afternoon at 2. Rev. Moses R. Lovell will officiate and burial will be in the Forestdale Cemetery<\/p>\n

Henry L. Russell, Holyoke Industry Leader, Is Dead<\/strong><\/p>\n

Succumbs at Hospital After Long Illness — Prominent in City’s Social and Financial Circles<\/strong><\/p>\n

Holyoke, March 05 —<\/strong> Henry L. Russell, 71, of Oak Street, President of J. Russell & Co. and highly esteemed citizen of Holyoke, died this noon at the Holyoke Hospital following a long period of invalidism. He suffered a stroke in 1929, followed by several others, and had been compelled to give up active business in large measure, though since that time he visited the office almost daily for a long period and kept in close touch with affairs there.<\/p>\n

He was active in trade relations and in organization work of the American Steel and Hardware Association, the New England Retail Hardware Dealers’ Association and the Western Massachusetts Dealers’ Association. He was one of the group that established the Holyoke Canoe Club and one of its first Commodores. He was one of the directors of the Board of Trade that preceded the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Mt. Tom Golf Club, Rotary Club, and the Second Congregational Church. He was a president of the Newton Paper Company, Director of the Hadley Falls Trust Company and trustee of the Holyoke Savings Bank.<\/p>\n

Mr. Russell was fond of outdoor life and especially of fishing and made many trips before his illness to fishing resports. He privately assisted many who were unfortunate, but disliked publicity and few ever heard of these acts.<\/p>\n

Mr. Russell was born at Chicopee, April 1, 1861, son of Robert Russell and grandson of Joel Russell, who founded the Russell concern, the family going back many generations, being represented in the Revolutionary War and all Colonial wars.<\/p>\n

Members of the family have been in most wars since, including the Civil War and the World War.<\/p>\n

Joel Russell moved to Holyoke from Chicopee and built the Russell house on Chestnut Street. Henry came to Holyoke with his father and family and after attending high school for three years, left in 1879 to join his father in the business which the latter had bought some years before from Snow & Flanders. The business was moved to Dwight and Race Streets, where it has expanded since.<\/p>\n

In 1886 Mr. Russell married Susan Newton, daughter of the late Moses Newton, who survives him, with two sons, Robert H. and Stuart A., and one daughter Mrs. James Logan, all of this city, and several grandchildren<\/p>\n

The funeral will be held at the Second Congregational Church Thursday afternoon at 2. Rev. Moses R. Lovell and Rev. Dr. E. B. Robinson will officiate and the burial will be in Forestdale.<\/p>\n
