[Note: This piece is subtitled a &#8220;<em>Play of Tennessee Life in Acts<\/em>&#8221; written by David K Higgins, and is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/atpineyridgeplay00higg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>available from the Internet Archive<\/strong><\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln&#8217;s birthday was remembered at the services of the Highlands Methodist Church yesterday forenoon, <strong>Rev. F. M. Estes<\/strong> preaching a sermon on the text &#8220;The new emancipation.&#8221; In the evening the sixth of his series of sermons on the life of Christ was preached, the special topic being &#8220;Wayside ministrations.&#8221; <strong>R. M. Copeland<\/strong> led the Epworth League service, the topic being the freedmen&#8217;s aid and southern education society and its work. The women&#8217;s circle of the church will hold a valentine&#8217;s day supper Wednesday evening from 6 to 8. At 8 Rev. <strong>George K. McNutt<\/strong>, the &#8220;dinner pail man,&#8221; will give an address upon &#8220;From pulpit to factory.&#8221; Admission will be free to all. A collection will be taken to pay for expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The funeral of John McCabe was held Saturday morning at the house, 139 Chestnut Street, followed by requiem mass at St. Patrick&#8217;s chapel. <strong>Mgr. P. J. Harkins<\/strong> officiated, and the bearers were <strong>W. T. Walsh, D.W. Kenney, George Bradshaw, John J. Sullivan<\/strong>,<strong> John Ryan<\/strong> and<strong> W.P. Buckley<\/strong>. There were many floral offerings, including an anchor and harp from the employees of the Crocker Mill. The burial was in Calvary Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. M.A. Allen<\/strong> and <strong>Miss Adele Allen<\/strong> entertained Saturday afternoon friends from the Mount Holyoke College and Smith College faculties and from the Springfield College Club. M<strong>rs. John James<\/strong>, <strong>Mrs. F. B. Towne<\/strong>, <strong>Miss Alice Newton<\/strong>, <strong>Miss Clara Chapin<\/strong> and <strong>Miss Pierce<\/strong> of Springfield assisted in receiving.<\/p>\n<p>Many are looking forward with much anticipation to the annual banquet of the Holyoke Businessmen&#8217;s Association to be held at the Hotel Hamilton Wednesday evening. <strong>E. S. Draper<\/strong> will be the leading speaker, and <strong>Mayor N.P. Avery<\/strong> and <strong>Rev. H.H. Morrill<\/strong> will also speak. There will be both vocal and instrumental music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Miss Bridget Hawkins<\/strong> of Summer Street slipped on the sidewalk in front of Whiting&#8217;s coal office on Dwight Street late Saturday night and fractured her right ankle.
