Richard, it really is amazing how many of us have such warm memories of Mountain Park. As you say, it really is a shame more was unable to be preserved!

Nancy, glad you approve! I was a little worried considering the nature of the article. I can imagine not knowing of this story, I've learned a few secrets within my own family since beginning history/genealogy research.

Thanks for your comment!

Thank you so much for posting this...Philip was my grandfather, and although he passed away long before I was born, this was certainly not a story that was ever told to us grandchildren!!

I remember the good old days of Mountain Park As a kid I would go there with the family and there was always something to do from, Live Polka Band with Larry Chesky, Bingo, Lots of games and rides for everyone. There were also shows of live country music, talent shows, and even bear Wrestling. W.H.Y.N Day was always a fun but very busy day at the park also. As I grew up I worked at the park and it was fun to be able to make the other kids have there fun like I used to do. I Remember Mable she used to clean the park up and she would always wear her funny hats or the now popular barrette/headband with stars and things on them. How she could really make people laugh. It is to bad that it is gone now. If People would not have burnt the place down I know it would have reopened from speaking with one of the owners Roger, But having to rebuild everything and the rides that needed some updating and with the competition of Riverside Amusements now Six Flags New England was just to much. It is a shame that it is gone but at least the Merry Go Round is in the State park after a long period of fund raising to purchase it and a lot of hard work to refurbish it. I wish that more could have been saved and kept in a type of museum of remembrance of the long history of the family Amusement Park.

Hi,
I am a transplanted Holyoker that has lived in Lynn, MA for twenty-one years now. Family are still all in Holyoke, so I get back to visit at least once a month. We have an old factory in Lynn named for Lydia Pinkham that is now used as an artists community. It is located on Western Avenue in Lynn. Thought this info might be helpful in tracing who she had been.
I have been enjoying your site. Thank you!

Laurel...

Did this aerial demonstration take place at Jones Point? That's the only place in the Highlands that ever had an airstrip, as far as I know. If so--what a logistical nightmare to get all those people/vehicles down two steep hills...the only access to that neighborhood!

BTW--thanks for all you do to keep Holyoke's history alive.

Thanks for the extra bit of info. The other item that caught my interest was the Curtiss Airplane meeting.
did planes fly into to somewhere in Highland Park?

Neil, it really is amazing how many strong memories of Holyoke many of us have. I think Steiger's is definitely one of them for me too -- I can so clearly remember visits to the store also beginning from childhood. It really was such an anchor for us and for downtown too!

Thanks for your kind words about the site, so glad you like it!

I love this! My grandmother was an elevator operator in Steigers and then "promoted" to womens perfumes. I remember going there with my mom literally hundreds of times when I was a wee lad. Every time I hear the name "Steigers" it brings back amazing memories. Thanks for everything you do on this site....it is awesome.

So true regarding women in obituaries during this time!
Thanks for leaving a comment, I had looked her up on the 1900 Census and meant to add a note to the post, but forgot to do so.

Her name was Alice E. Carpenter, born in MA June 1840. Her son Mark (b. Dec 1869) was a pharmacist and her daughter's forename was Maud (b. Oct 1871).
