Rev. P. B. Phelan the Buyer — Belief That Home for Working Girls May be Established There.
A big real estate deal was closed yesterday, when Rev. P. B. Phelan, pastor of the Sacred Heart church, purchased the Merrick homestead of the Merrick estate. The property is considered one of the most valuable pieces of land in Elmwood, and contains a large house with land frontage of 387 feet on Northampton street and 638 feet on Westfield road, containing in all 269,000 square feet. The valuation given on the land is $32,500, and although the price paid could not be learned last evening, it probably was a great deal more that that sum. The estate has recently received offers of from $27,000 to $30,000 for the property, and it is believed that it will be able to obtain at least $37,000 for the homestead. Rev. Mr. Phelan could not be reached last evening to learn what use he would place the newly acquired property, bit there are some rumors about for some time that he was thinking of establishing a home for working girls, and it may be that it will be used for that purpose. The new purchase will make a valuable addition to the Sacred Heart property.

Thanks Laurel. Love the picture. We live on the old Merrick Estate Property. Backyard I think from the picture if the house’s front door is on Northamton Street. I always wondered what it looked like.
Laurel, showed this to my husband. He wonders if they is somewhere that we could get a copy of this picture?
Susan,
Apologies for not getting back to you on the Clark info — I have a project deadline I am working on but have some info to get back to you on the Clark genealogy. I own the book in which this picture appears, so how about if I find the book, make a hi-res scan and printout for you? Let me know if this sounds ok to you. This next week is crazy — I have to get to FL for a business meeting but will return in a few days where there will be time for find/scan the Merrick image.
Thank you Laurel. This would be great. Contact me at my email when you get back.
