Icebox, 1926
When I was a kid, my grandmother and others of her generation always referred to the refrigerator as the icebox. I accepted this and for a long time assumed it to be idiomatic. Of course I did learn that it was an icebox because in fact refrigeration in this era was from use of ice, rather than the electric-driven machines we are familiar with today.
Today these old wooden iceboxes are worth significantly more than the purchase price you see in the ad, selling today for hundreds on up. Just check out this 1895 model.
