DeRoy Park, former Cononchet Park
Holyoke — Ceremonies attendant upon the renaming of Cononchet park in ward 1 will be on the 20th, the 23rd anniversary of the day on which Narcisse A. DeRoy was killed in action during the World war. He was in action at Chateau Thierry.
DeRoy was one of five sons of Mr. and Mrs. Narcisse A. DeRoy of ward 2, all of whom were in the service during the World war. The others are Oscar, former alderman and representative, George, Ernest and Lazur.
The suggestion first came to the park department more than a year ago and shortly after its publication, there w was objection from a French-American organization that a Holyoker of French extraction had been killed in action before DeRoy and that the park, if it was to be renamed, should be named after him. However, objections have died down and during the past year action was taken establishing the park as DeRoy park. The origin of its first name is still obscure. It is named after a Narragansett chief’s son, but why has never been brought forward.
