First the Before picture, below: The Windsor Hotel is still standing, to the right and you can just see the edge of the Opera House roof , Whiting Coal is across the street, to the left of the railroad sign; Foreground to the right is an insurance company. Only horse-drawn wagons. Love the awnings! (Click on images to enlarge)
Dwight Street of Old pre-1899, Looking West
Almost the same view in 1923: Windsor Hotel is gone (burned in 1899), cars are parked on the street. The Trolley tracks are clearly visible in the image (there is a trolley heading down Dwight St.). In the center, slightly to the right is the Holyoke Theater (you can see the vertical sign in the enlarged view), and nearly dead center is a painted sign on a building for Parfitt Furniture Company. The building located beyond the city hall on High street is completely different, and on the same intersection we have the the Marble building and another building not visible on the “before” picture. And again, those awnings!
