Ceremonies Held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in the Presence of Many Clergymen and Relatives.
Holyoke, Dec. 11. –Rev. John P. Mitton, curate to Rev. Samuel Dorrance at St. Ann’s Church, Brooklyn, was today ordained to the priesthood of the Episcopal Church at St. Paul’s Church, this City, by Rt. Rev. John T. Dallas, bishop of New Hampshire. The ceremonies were carried out in the presence of a large body of friends and relatives including vestrymen and other officials of the church. The candidate was the first to be ordained in St. Paul’s Church and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mitton of Lincoln Street.
The ordination sermon was preached by Rev. A. Vincent Bennett of Fitchburg, and the candidate was presented by Rev. Franklin Knight, rector of St. Paul’s Church. Rev. Mr. Mitton received the order of deacon last May.
Rev. Mr. Mitton is a graduate of the Holyoke High School, 1927, and attended Columbia University and St. Stephen’s College after which he attended and graduated from the General Theological Seminary in New York City.
Visiting clergy, relatives and St. Paul’s vestrymen were guests at a luncheon served in the church dining room after the ordination rites. The visiting clergymen included Rev. William Cote of Shelburne Falls; Rev. John Whiteman of Greenfield; Rev. John Carlton of Ware; Rev. William Soule of West Springfield; Rev. George Webster of Clinton; Rev. Ralph Pease of Southbridge; Rev. Vincent Bennett of Fitchburg; Rev. George Stockwell of Rochedale; Rev. A. Packard of Northampton and Rev. Charles Cadigan and George Cadigan of Amherst.
