Two Ballots Taken to Determine the Winner

The first meeting of the school board for the year was held last evening and the board organized for the year, Terence O’Donnell being elected chairman on the second ballot. The selection of Mr. O’Donnell did not create much surprise, as it was thought that the choice would be between him and Committeeman Waters for the office. Committeeman Waters voted for Mr. O’Donnell, who received five votes on the second ballot. Following the opening of the meeting Committeeman Waters was elected temporary chairman and the balloting for a permanent chairman began, the result of the first ballot being” O’Donnell, 3, Waters, 3; Lynch, 2; and Baush, 1. No choice resulting, the second ballot was called for, with the following result: for O’Donnell, Committeemen Kennedy, Lynch, Messier, Waters and Baush; for Waters, Committeemen Webber and Childs; for Baush, Committeeman O’Donnell; for Lynch, Committeeman Donoghue.

Mr. O’Donnell was declared elected and made a brief speech of acceptance thanking the committeemen for the honor conferred, and pledging himself to perform the duties of the office to the best of his ability. He said that he thought that a wrong impression had been current during the past campaign and turning to the superintendent he pledged to him his heartiest support and cooperation. Miss Elizabeth M. Bartlett of grade 2 in the Elmwood School, who had been given a leave of absence until January 1, wished the leave extended to September 1, and on motion of Committeeman Baush, this was granted. The meeting was then adjourned until next Monday evening.
