Michael J. Cosgrove Fell Overboard From Ship at Manila — Had Many Relatives in Springfield, West Springfield, Holyoke and Northampton.
Supplementing a report under date of the 15th, came another report yesterday from New York to the effect that Michael J. Cosgrove of the United States Navy lost his life the 13th when he fell from a ship stationed at Manila, P.I., and was eaten by a shark. He formerly lived in Springfield and New Haven, CT. He had many relatives in Springfield, West Springfield, Holyoke and Northampton.
Mrs. Mary Masterson of 38 Longfellow Terrace when called last night and asked if she had heard any particulars regarding the sudden death stated that she had not. The first dispatch came from the bureau of navigation at Washington, D.C., and the communication received yesterday by his brother, H. Cosgrove of New York gave the particulars.
Cosgrove had been in the navy more than 20 years and at the time of the fatality was on a navy yard ferry operating between Cavite and Manilla. He held the rank of shipfitter, 1st class and was a member of the crew of the U.S.S. Canopus. The later communication states he was working on the ship at the time he met his sudden death.
Mr. Cosgrove is survived by several cousins, Mrs. Mary Masterson of 28 Longfellow Terrace, Springfield. James J. Kelly of Irving Street, West Springfield; Henry Cosgrove, of Holyoke; Mrs. Margaret Murphy and Mrs. Emma Morrissey of Northampton and Henry Kelly of Norwich, CT., and an aunt Mrs. Margaret Kelly of Northampton.
