Veteran Store Proprietor Has Been at Holyoke Since 1884 — Came to United States in 1880
Holyoke, Jan 2 — Twenty members of the immediate family of Caesar Equi, Holyoke’s oldest fruit and confectionary store proprietor, and possibly Holyoke’s oldest active merchant, gathered at the Roger Smith Hotel this noon to celebrate Mr. Equi’s 80th birthday. The actual birthday comes tomorrow.
Mr. Equi’s store and cafeteria are at 485 Dwight Street. He came t this country in 1880 and opened his first store in Holyoke in 1884. He has been in his present location since 1900.
Mr. Equi has been at his store daily, almost without interruption, since starting the business and is probably known personally by more people in the city than any other merchant.
He has three sons, Frank, Caesar and Michael, and four daughters, Mrs. Eva Petri, Josephine Equi, Mrs. Virginia McKenna and Mrs. Lucy Bowler, all of this city. Mr. Equi was presented numerous gifts, flowers and messages of congratulation.
From The Springfield Republican.
When did Equi’s close? 1960’s?
