City Hall Lawn

The granite drinking fountain on the city hall lawn, the gift to the city of Holyoke from the Woman’s Christian temperance Union of that city, was dedicated yesterday afternoon with appropriate exercises in the city hall and at the fountain itself. There were about 150 in the hall, the exercises being held at 3. The highlands Quartet sang and there were addresses by Miss Angelina Worswick, who recounted the history of the fountain and the raising of the money therefor, Thomas Connors of the St. Jerome Temperance Society and Rev. Dr. E. A. Reed. The fountain was formally presented to the city by Mrs. Rosina A. Whiting and accepted in the city’s behalf by Mayor Chapin. The fountain cost between $1500 and $2000 and stands on the corner of Dwight and High Streets. In hot weather the water will pass through pipes cooled by ice beneath, so the water will always be cold.
