Charles M. Hartzell, 48, died at his home on Sycamore street Tuesday night suddenly of heart failure. He had been ill about two weeks from becoming heated in the sun, and was recovering when he was taken with heart trouble, and died within two hours. The cause assigned was overwork and exhaustion. Mr. Hartzell had for the past five years been sexton of the Forestdale cemetery, where his love for flowers had free scope. He had worked hard and faithfully in that position and his work had been commented upon favorably by those who had occasion to visit the place. He had also take great interest in local horticultural affairs and was secretary of the Holyoke horticultural society. While not active in politics, he had represented ward 7 as a councilman in 1893-4. Mr. Hartzell came to Holyoke from Mt. Holly Springs, Pa., 14 years ago, and was employed first at the Whiting mills and later by the Parsons paper company. His wife was Miss Mary Gloss of Mt. Holly Springs, whom he married 27 years ago. He was an Odd Fellow and a member of the United Workmen. Beside his widow he leaves one son Leander C., of the firm of Ross, Burgin and Hartzell. The funeral will be held to-morrow afternoon at 4 o’clock. Rev. Dr. E. A. Reed will officiate and the burial will be in the Forestdale cemetery.
