A Case of Ruptured Friendship

Mrs. Bridget Madden of Maple street and Mrs. Theresa Madden were once inseparable companions. They sat on the back porch together and compared the latest fashions, discussed the latest scandals and borrowed each other’s flatirons and other things between times. Some happening shattered their friendship, but not until Mrs. Bridget had given as a token of affection to Mrs. Theresa a watch and a table cloth. After the rupture Mrs. Bridget’s visions were of the table cloth and the watch, and in her dreams she saw herself regaining what had been given before, and she vainly asked for them back. A day or so the dream came true, for she entered and took the watch and table cloth, for which a charge of larceny was preferred against her by Mrs. Theresa. The judge heard the case yesterday morning and discharged her, but the table cloth and the watch were restored to Mrs. Theresa, so when court adjourned and the two women went out they looked neither to the right nor to the left nor saw each other.
