As an ice-cream center, especially of retail ice-cream at five cents a plate, Holyoke takes the lead of any city in New England of her size, dealers in that delicacy state. A low estimate gives 100 gallons a day as the daily consumption, and much is sold all the year around for home consumption. Some of the retail five-cent parlors sell as high as 40 gallons a day in very hot weather. One of the leading dealers stated that trade this season was ahead of last year. By an agreement, ice-cream soda is 10 cents, though some of the dealers are “kicking,” and it is likely that it will be reduced to five cents again another season, except when served at a table. One firm in Holyoke wholesales 1100 gallons a month. Much is sold at Mountain park, but that is made there by the caterer, but the cream used on Mt. Tom is made in Holyoke and a good lot is sold on a hot day there, too. Owing to the foggy, rainy, misty weather, attendance, and consequently sales, on Mt. Tom have diminished the past few days, but the outlook is good days to-day and to-morrow.
