Death of Mrs. C. O. Carpenter

Mrs. Charles O. Carpenter, widow of Dr. Carpenter, who died about two years ago, died last evening about 9 at her home, 330 Maple street, Holyoke, after a long illness. She had been in poor health for some time, and her condition had been critical for the past few days. She was a member of the Elmwood Baptist church and a woman highly esteemed throughout the community. She leaves a son, Mark of Holyoke, a daughter, Mrs. Eugene Clapp of Roxbury, three brothers, Charles E. and James Ball of Holyoke, and J. Ball of Vinton, Ia., and one sister, Mrs. James Allyn of Holyoke.

  1. I guess it’s a sign of the times that Mrs. Carpenter’s own first name isn’t even mentioned!

  2. So true regarding women in obituaries during this time!
    Thanks for leaving a comment, I had looked her up on the 1900 Census and meant to add a note to the post, but forgot to do so.

    Her name was Alice E. Carpenter, born in MA June 1840. Her son Mark (b. Dec 1869) was a pharmacist and her daughter’s forename was Maud (b. Oct 1871).

  3. Thanks for the extra bit of info. The other item that caught my interest was the Curtiss Airplane meeting.
    did planes fly into to somewhere in Highland Park?
