Committees Are Named.
Interests of Babies will be Paramount in Holyoke from May 7 to 13.
Preliminary plans for Holyoke’s “baby week” campaign, which will be held from May 7 to 13, have been made and the committees appointed. The committee in charge are for “A square deal for Holyoke babies” and the central thought for the will will be “The community’s responsibility for its babies.”
The purpose of “baby week” is primarily educational. It seeks: First, to bring home to every Holyoker the fact that it is sound civil economy to reduce the sickness and death rates among babies and to improve the coming generations; second, to tell the people of Holyoke the facts concerning the present status of infant mortality and what is being done to improve conditions which injuriously affect the health of their babies. Third, to give to the fathers and mothers, the brothers and sisters of babies such information as will result in better care and feeding, especially during the summer months, when the mortality rate is needlessly high; fourth, to effect a better understanding among all health agencies with a view to co-ordinate activities; to avoid duplication and waste of energy and to increase effectiveness and scope of work.
The headquarters will be in the Holyoke city hall and there will be exhibits, lectures, literature and information during the week. The officers are as follows: Honorary president, Mayor John J. White; honorary vice-president, Superintendent of Schools, Francis T. McSherry; active officers, head of directors of Holyoke infant hygiene association.
