Ten-Team Loop Will Open Season May 17; Clinic Set Wednesday, Jamboree May 10

With a complete set of rules drawn up and a schedule for the first round accepted, the Pee-Wee Baseball League, under the sponsorship of the Holyoke Junior Chamber of Commerce, is now already to make its debut in this city. Holyoke was represented by a single pee-wee nine last season but under the guidance of Ron Bennett, a 10-team circuit has been organized for the coming campaign. A special baseball movie clinic for players on the league clubs will be held Wednesday night at the Holyoke Boys Club. Next on the agenda will be a big jamboree in which all teams will compete on Sunday, May 10, at Mackenzie Stadium. After that, it will be play ball as the official season will be launched with a five-game program on Sunday, May 17.

To help build up interest in the league, sponsors have been obtained for each of the clubs so that the kids will be properly uniformed and the teams properly equipped. To assist in their baseball development, coaches, several with lengthy backgrounds in the national pastime have been secured for the various clubs.

Teams and managers are Springdale Turners, Charlie Morissette; Mater Dolorosa AC, Max Skypeck; In-Wee-Go, Ed Daly; Nick’s Nest, Bernie Healy; Robert Goss Stags, Al Brunelle; Knights of Columbus, John Vaughan; Schermerhorn Shrimps, Sal Canata; Sayffer’s Motors, Earl Lyons; Elks, Mike Begley; and Gerry’s Music Shop, Tom Foley, Jr.

The founding of this circuit in Holyoke should prove to be a boo to baseball as it will develop interest among boys in the 7-10 age bracket. League officials feel that they are doing the right thing in promoting baseball and to show that their principal interest is in developing ball players and providing a suitable recreational outlet for the lads.
