The highway committee of the business men’s association, who had been appointed to confer with the Northampton and Westhampton boards of trade relative to a state highway, held a conference with the board of public works yesterday. It was found by them that the Northampton officials desired the road between Kenilworth and Mt. Tom for a state highway, and that the Easthampton people were rather looking for a new highway over the mountain. Chairman Walsh of the board of public works recalled that the state highway commission thought the best solution of the Northampton road problem was to have the road laid out entirely new between the two points avoiding the steep hill. The board of public works and a committee consisting of Albert Steiger, A. E. Hemphill and E. L. Lyman will attempt to ascertain from the state highway commission if this will be feasible, and if they will consider laying out a highway between the two places. As matters were at that time, the city of Northampton was to acquire the land needed and lay out the road, and the commissioners would furnish the money for the building of the new road. The general opinion in Holyoke and Northampton is that the two cities need a better highway between them, and that it would be of more advantage than a road between Holyoke and Easthampton.
