College Girls See Aldermen Frown on Effort to Make Life Brighter for Police and Firemen

Twenty members of the class in civil government of Mount Holyoke College. chaperoned by Prof. Amy Hewes, were present at the board of aldermen’s meeting last evening. They were privileged to see Alderman Sweeny’s two orders for making life one grand sweet song in police and fire department quarters by the addition of city bought pool tables get heavily stepped on by the aldermen. Aside from this there was little of interest at the meeting and no fireworks.

Perhaps the repainting of the sidewalls in the aldermanic chambers, taking off the red war paint which has been the color there for the past two years and substituting a peaceful light green may have something to do with the lack of war talk which has characterized recent meetings. It is also possible that the presence of the Mount Holyoke College girls may have had a subduing influence. Anyway the business was transacted speedily and the board adjourned about 40 minutes after being called to order by President Bosworth. Following the opening of the meeting the following nine jurors were drawn by Alderman long for the superior court sitting of the 31st: James Stalker of 133 Brown Avenue, John A. McCormick of 76 Carlton Street, Ernest R. Tauscher of 22 James Street, John H. Parks of 136 Oak Street, Constant Wolski of 876 Dwight Street, Timothy Stebbins of 82 Lyman Street, Herbert White of 692 Dwight Street, Louis Strauss of 216 Oak Street, Maurice Slotnick of 25 Linden Street.
