Fireman’s Funeral Interrupted by Fire Alarm

02 February 1897

The funeral of Richard M. Wolohan was held yesterday morning with a high mass at the St. Jerome Church and burial at the St. Jerome cemetery. The bearers were selected from the members of the fire department with whom he had been associated for many years and they were as follows: L.F. Jones, William Little, Walter King, Val Goddard, Melville Snow and William Delaney. A large number of members of the call force of the department attended the funeral and escorted the body to the grave. Among the firemen present was Chief Lynch. The fire alarm that was rung in while the funeral was in progress disarranged things somewhat, but only the men who had to answer the box on the first alarm fell out of the line. There were a large number of funeral offerings.

And, printed elsewhere in the same paper:

Box 71, at the corner of Hampden and Pleasant Streets, was struck at about 10 o’clock yesterday morning while the members of the Highlands fire companies were attending the funeral of Richard M. Wolohan. The funeral was on the way to the cemetery and the hose cart was in the line, escorted by members of the company. The firemen answered the call at once, however, and found a blaze in a house on Taylor Street, occupied by Fred Speidell and owned by Fred Strong. The blaze was caused by a defective flue and gave the men a half hour’s hard work. The principal damage was in an attic room. The loss will probably be covered by insurance.
