Hafey Given until Wednesday to Put Tenements in Sanitary Condition

Jeremiah J. Hafey, owner of the six-tenement block at 105 Beech Street, was found guilty in district court today of violations that require that toilets must be in good repair and supplied with running water after a spicy hearing in which evidence was introduced to show that the block was unsanitary in other ways.

Inspector Joseph M. Toepfert characterized the toilets on the first floor, used by the employees of a broom factory as “awful” and “worse than a pigpen.”

Plumbing inspector Frank L. Avery was complainant. Hafey pleaded not guilty. Both Avery and Toepfert told of repeated visits to the block, and testified that, in spite of their warnings, Hafey had paid no attention to them. The case was continued until Wednesday to give Hafey a chance to make the improvements ordered by the board of health.
