George “Red” Rafferty of 175 Locust Street, former three-letter man at Holyoke High School, had the end of his nose bitten off by a large German police dog yesterday afternoon.
Rafferty, who tips the scales over the 200 mark and stands well over six feet, was walking on Davis Street when the dog approached him as was his daily custom. Rafferty bent over and patted the dog’s head. Without warning the animal snapped viciously, taking the end of Rafferty’s nose.
Rafferty was taken to the Holyoke hospital, where the injury was treated by Dr. Fred Celce. The injury will probably mar Rafferty’s features for life. Rafferty, in talking about the incident, stated that he was at a loss to account for the changed disposition of the animal, having played with the dog on numerous previous occasions.
