A Survivor of the Titanic Wreck

Eugene Daly, who was one of the survivors of the disaster to the Titanic, came to Holyoke Monday night to take a position at the Germania mills. He came over in the steerage, and states that he was pitched from his berth by force of the collision with the iceberg. He had no idea that the ship was going to sink, but when the ship did start to go down, there was screaming and crying among the passengers. He said that he attempted to get into a lifeboat on the starboard side, but was ordered away, and later, with six other men, managed to launch a raft near the bow of the vessel, getting it over the side, where they were compelled to jump into the water and swim after it. The bow of the ship at this time was nearly level with the sea. He states that they swam to the raft and clung to it until rescued by the Carpathia. He lost all of his personal effects in the wreck and about $500 in money. His home is in Athlone County, West Meath, Ireland.
