Edward R. Wirt Dies At His Home

Edward R. Wirt of 63 Fairfield Avenue died this evening at this home. He had been ill about two years. Mr. Wirt had been employed as a salesman for the Holyoke Sales Company since 1932. He was born in Lowell, January 27, 1891, son of the late Edward R. Wirt and attended the Lowell Public Schools. He was graduated from the Lowell Textile School and came to Holyoke in 1912, taking employment for several years with the Lyman Mills. He later became associated with Edward F. Robertson & Son, cotton specialists of Boston, acting for them in Utica, New York and Lewiston, Maine.

He was a member of the AEF, serving in France with Co. A 18th machine gun battalion from July, 1918, to June 1919. He was a member of the New York Athletic club and American Legion post 754. He is survived by his widow, Gladys (Bartlett) Wirt; a sister, Mrs. F. Scott Carpenter of Watertown; a brother, Donald R. Wirt of Gulfport, Florida. The funeral will be in charge of Edward E. Day, funeral directors, and the arrangements will be announced.

  1. This is really interesting. Thank you. I’ve been trying to find the burial site of my Great Great Grandfather Anthony Hicks, father of Lucy and Mary Hicks who both died in the Precious Blood Church fire of 1875 in Holyoke. Maybe I’ll see him here one day !

  2. I know there were a number of Hicks in Holyoke who are buried in Forestdale, though they were not Catholic. That long ago I would check with the Springfield diocese, assuming he was Roman Catholic. Also, if you have the death certificate they usually list the dispensation of the body, at least a town name if not the actual burial place. Finally, if he did opt to be buried in Precious Blood Cemetery, there are many, many unmarked graves and I am not even sure if the diocese holds accurate information about all burials. If I see something with his name I will keep you in mind!
