Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Newcomb Observe 50th Anniversary

Holyoke, June 19 — The golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Newcomb is being celebrated today and tomorrow. he celebration really began Thursday when there was an entertainment in their home at the International Pump works, when C. Philip Coleman, president of the International Pump Company, presented the couple with a gold loving cup.

Mr. and Mrs. Newcomb were married in Vernon Center, Connecticut, January 20, 1874 by Rev. Amos Cheeseborough, pastor of the Congregational Church there. The couple came to Holyoke in 1881, when Mr. Newcomb became the superintendent and engineer of the Deane Steam Pump Company. Later this was made a part of the International Pump Company. On April 21, 1921, on completion of his 40th year of service for that company, he was presented with a silver testimonial. Mrs. Newcomb was born in the old Revere House in Boston, the daughter of Charles Rudolph and Dorcas Lavinia (Austin)( Kendall.

Mr. Newcomb was born in West Willington, Connecticut, August 7, 1854, the son of Charles Leonard and Martha Jane (Hudson) Newcomb. After a country school education, he served as a molder’s apprentice and a machinist’s journeyman, before entering Worcester Polytechnic Institute, from which he graduated a mechanical engineer in 1880. In 1883 he organized the American Society of Mechanical engineers, and recently served three years as on of the managers of the society. In 1919 he organized the Engineering Society of Western Massachusetts and was its first president; and in 1922 organized the American Society of Massachusetts Engineers, and became its first chairman. He is a member of the Engineers’ CLub of New York, is prominently identified with other engineering and technical societies, a director of Associated Industries of Massachusetts, National Metal Trades Association, National Founders’ Association and a member of other manufacturers’ and employers’ associations.

Mr. Newcomb has given generously of his time to city affairs, serving three years in the council and board of alderman, 17 years as chairman of the fire commission, and on numerous public committees. he is president of the Holyoke Co-operative Bank, an active member of the Baptist Church, and a stanch friend of worthy welfare work. His principal social and fraternal affiliations are Mount Tom Golf Club, Colony and Nayasset Club, Knights Templars, Elks and the Shrine.
