Location of Elmwood Park

by Laurel | October 28th, 2014

In the previous post, found immediately below this post, there is a reference to the work being done on Elmwood Park. The following is a map of where Elmwood Park was located in 1911 — on Beech St. While the photo in the previous post lacks clarity, in the image the stairs leading up to the street confirm this space to me. My mother’s family lived quite close and I grew up hearing this place called the Dingle. Assuming this was part of the park renovation (which I remember hearing was part of the WPA initiative in the 1930’s) I remember the wonderful walls that were built and extended down Beech St, removed years later when the street added more lanes for traffic flow. Map is from Richard’s Standard Atlas of the City of Holyoke, Springfield, Mass., 1911. Click through on the image to see a larger version.
