The youthfulness of Holyoke as a city is well shown by the following incident. The late Charles G. Allyn was sitting in John H. Woods office some time before he died and pointing down at the McAuslan & Wakelin building said: “I picked blackberries as a kid where that building stands.”
The picture shows the Wolcott block built in 1880, corner of high and Dwight streets. and in the read the Dr. O’Connor property. The McAuslan & Wakelin building now stands on the site of these buildings. The photograph is owned by John H. Woods and was taken by the late M. P. Warner. “I wish I knew what became of Mr. Warner’s plates,” said Mr. Woods the other day. “He had scores and hundreds of valuable plates. I suppose someone threw them into the junk pile.”
