James W. Bryden, Sr., 59, of 81 Jackson St., died yesterday in Holyoke Hospital.
He was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Sept. 9, 1901, son of the late George and Isabelle (Morrison) Bryden and was educated in the schools there. He came to this country and South Hadley in 1924 and for the past 35 years had resided in Holyoke. He was employed as a master mechanic for 30 years at the American Writing paper Corp.
Mr. Bryden held memberships in several Masonic organizations including Mount Tom Lodge, AF & AM, Mount Holyoke Royal Arch Chapter and Holyoke Council Royal and Select Masters. He was a past master of Mount Tom Lodge and on the board of directors of the Holyoke Masonic Association. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, member of the Holyoke Caledonian Benefit Club, and a past president, Clan McLaren, Order of Scottish Clans, of which he was a past president. Since June 1959, he had served on the advisory committee for the Holyoke Redevelopment Authority.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Gertrude (Cormack) Bryden, a son, James, Jr., of this city; a brother William in Scotland; six sisters, Miss Helen Bryden, Mrs. Margaret Campbell, Mrs. Violet Strachen, Mrs. Alice Wilson, Mrs. Beatrice Reid and Mrs Elizabeth Reid, all in Scotland; a granddaughter; also several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will take place at the Alger funeral home Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. Rev. James J. Anilosy will officiate. Burial will be at Forestdale cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
