Six New Cops Are Named by Mayor
Appointments Made in Compliance with Instructions of Aldermen
Meets a Long-Felt Want
Answers Demand for Better Protection in Certain Sections of Paper City
Six new policemen were named today by Mayor John J. White from the reserve force in compliance with the instructions of the aldermen, the authorization being completed last night. The appointees are:
Michael J. Herlihey, motorman, 10 Miller Avenue.
James J. Tisdale, paper maker, 245 Suffolk Street.
John T. Quinn, Farr Alpaca Company Mills, 654 High Street.
Albert M. Alben, motorman, 123 Newton Street.
Garrett Bowler, stationary fireman, 695 Main Street.
Patrick Falvey, laborer, 89 Walnut Street.
There has been a strong call for better police protection in several parts of the city, noticeably in South Holyoke, Oakdale and Elmwood, for some time, and in recent months Mayor White and City Marshall Lynch have been counseling regarding the increase, with the result manifest today.
The new men will begin their duties April 15, the first six months being probationary period, and in the interval the police authorities will give attention to a rearrangement of police beats or posts. Some day provision will be made for better protection in the Smith’s Ferry and West Holyoke districts, perhaps by assigning a mounted officer to the two sections of the city.
The bunch of new policemen appointed today is the largest number named in any one year for a quarter of a century, excepting under Mayor Curran’s administration. Seven or Eight additional officers were named then. Of the new men made known today Bowler and Falvey have been doing special duty for some weeks.
Trollymen Will Not Frequent Certain Places While in Uniform
Several of the Holyoke Street Railway men were in conference today with General Manager Pellissier of the concern regarding the frequenting of certain places in town while in uniform. It was agreed that whe men would be more discreet while in uniform. The places particularly in mind were poolrooms, regarding which residents have been commenting.
