Big Snake in Stairway — Kept people Out of Caledonian Block Until it was Killed. There was some excitement in the Caledonian building yesterday morning when a 56 inch snake was found coiled up on the stairs and ready to dispute the entrance of any of the officeholders of the building. Miss Annie Marshall, who is employed at the E. L. Twing office, was the first to discover the reptile, the snake objecting to her passing on the stairs. An alarm was given and the snake disposed of. It was later learned that it had escaped from the cage in a freak show which has been open in the building adjoining, and later the proprietor of the show put in an appearance for the remains.
Investigation as to Daniel Brown’s Death — The police are conducting an inquiry regarding the death of Daniel Brown, who died in te House of Providence Hospital Saturday morning. An autopsy on the body showed that the skull was fractured, but whether this was done in the fall down a manhole in the rear of the Ranger building or whether Brown was the victim of foul play has not yet been determined.
Another Holyoke Lawyer in Race. Sheehan Now Seeks the Appointment as District Attorney. — One more aspirant for the position of district attorney of the western district, to succeed former Dist. Atty. C. T. Callahan, recently appointed to the superior court bench, developed yesterday in the person of P. H. Sheehan. It is reported that Mr. Sheehan s now in Boston in the interest of his candidacy for the place.
With Mr. Sheehan’s entry into the contest, there are now four Holyoke lawyers in the race, the others being James O’Shea, Richard P. Stapleton and Nathan P. Avery. Latest reports from Boston are to the effect that Mr. O’Shea appears to have the strongest looking backing and is looked upon as almost certain to receive the appointment. It is also understood that the candidacy of Mr. Avery has resulted in much pressure being brought on Gov. Walsh not to appoint him, some of this opposition harking back, it is said, to the recent municipal election.
