Mrs. Mary Walence is Bound Over Without Bail to the September Sitting of the Grand Jury

Mrs. Mary Walence, 43, who was arrested the 11th charged with the murder of her husband. Paul, at their home, 71 Linden Street, was formally arraigned before Judge John Hildreth at today’s session of district court and held after examination for the September sitting of the grand jury without bail. Atty. Thomas C. Maher appeared for Mrs. Walence and the state put in merely a skeleton case sufficient to warrant the woman being held for probably cause.

Few new facts were introduced to those already published. Perhaps the most vital fact in the vase was the testimony of Associate Medical Examiner Patrick J. Moriarty of Chicopee, who was called in as the Holyoke medical examiners were both out of the city. He testified that the direction and location of the bullets were such that the shots could not have been fire from outside the house.

Other witnesses were Miss Stella Walence, the oldest daughter of the Walence family, Capt. Peter A. Cullen and Charles P. Ryan of the city engineer’s office, who drew plans of the layout of the house for the police.

Gun Traced Somewhat

Capt. Cullen testified that the .25 caliber revolver used in the fatal shooting had been traced somewhat and it was firs bought in Carlisle’s store in Hartford, CT, by a man giving his name as Grossman of 151 Bridge Street, Springfield. This man has been questioned by Cullen and he would not reveal anything.

The daughter, Stella, according to the testimony offered by two of the three officers that were on the stand this morning told them that the bullets were fired through one of the open windows of the bedroom in which her father met his death. The case for the Commonwealth is being conducted by John J. Granfield, assistant district attorney.
